Navaratri Day 6: Katyayani & Chinnamasta

Katyayani is celebrated as a warrior form of Durga—an image of resolve, protection and the refusal to surrender before destructive forces.

The Mahavidya Chinnamasta presents a radically different sacred image: the self-decapitated Goddess, whose iconography has received interpretations involving life, death, nourishment, sacrifice and transcendence. This is not ordinary visual symbolism, and it should not be reduced to a simplistic lesson.

Reading them together philosophically opens a difficult but worthwhile question: What does courage look like when our own ego or attachments are involved?

It can take bravery to face an external challenge. It can require an entirely different kind of bravery to admit a mistake, let go of a fixed identity or accept that personal success is not the only measure of a meaningful life.

Katyayani symbolizes confrontation with danger. Chinnamasta challenges conventional assumptions about selfhood and existence.
