Nine nights or ten wisdoms?

Transcript

1. AAnvayaHari Om!! Welcome to SamskritiArts Conversations. I'm Anvaya.
2. VVedarthAnd I'm Vedarth. Today is the first of a short Navaratri set, and we have a question that has been bothering Anvaya for a week.
3. AAnvayaIt's true! Every year we celebrate Navaratri — nine nights for the Goddess. Nine forms of Durga. But then I keep hearing about the ten Mahavidyas. So, Vedarth, which is it? Nine or ten?
4. VVedarthBoth, actually — but they are two different groupings, and that's the first thing to get clear. The Navadurga are nine forms of Durga: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.
5. AAnvayaThe list we hear in so many homes during Navaratri.
6. VVedarthExactly. Their names appear in the Devi Kavacha, which is traditionally recited along with the Durga Saptashati. The Dasha Mahavidya — the Ten Great Wisdoms — are a separate group, especially important in Shakta and Tantric traditions. Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala.
7. AAnvayaOkay, so then is Day One's goddess also a Mahavidya? Is there some ancient chart that maps one to the other?
8. VVedarthNo — and this is important. No single, universally accepted scripture prescribes a nine-day correspondence between them. They are not interchangeable.
9. AAnvayaThen why put them side by side at all?
10. VVedarthBecause when you compare their symbolism, you get a beautiful framework for reflection. So in our series, every pairing is an interpretive connection based on shared themes. Not a ritual instruction. Not a claim that one goddess is the other.
11. AAnvayaI like that we say it upfront. Okay, give me an example. Day One.
12. VVedarthDay One pairs Shailaputri, the daughter of the mountains, with Bhuvaneshwari, whose name means the Sovereign of the Worlds. Shailaputri is about grounding, a stable beginning. Bhuvaneshwari is about vast space — the space in which everything exists.
13. AAnvayaFoundation and space. So — before you grow, know where you're standing.
14. VVedarthThat's literally the reflection for that day. "Before seeking growth, understand the ground on which you stand."
15. AAnvayaNice. And the fierce ones? Because honestly, when people see Kali or Chinnamasta, many get a little scared.
16. VVedarthThat's fair. Take Day Seven — Kalaratri alongside two Mahavidyas, Kali and Dhumavati. Kalaratri dispels fear. Kali is associated with time, transformation and liberation. And Dhumavati represents things we usually avoid talking about — loss, ageing, deprivation, impermanence.
17. AAnvayaDhumavati is the widow goddess, no? We hardly ever see her in calendar art.
18. VVedarthShe's often depicted as a widow, yes, and you're right, she rarely appears in popular images. Which is exactly why she matters here. These traditions make room for suffering and uncertainty — they don't pretend wisdom only lives in pleasant experiences.
19. AAnvayaThat's actually quite comforting. Okay — what about the tenth day? Vijayadashami. Is that the tenth wisdom?
20. VVedarthGood catch, but no. Vijayadashami is not traditionally a tenth Mahavidya day. In our series it's simply a moment to look back on the whole journey — strength and compassion, creation and dissolution, prosperity and renunciation.
21. AAnvayaAnd this year Vijayadashami falls on the twentieth of October in much of India.
22. VVedarthYes — but check your local calendar or temple, because dates and observances differ by region. Which brings me to the other big point: Navaratri itself is celebrated very differently across India.
23. AAnvayaOf course. In Bengal it's Durga Puja, in the South you have Golu, Bommala Koluvu in Andhra and Telangana, Ayudha Puja…
24. VVedarthAnd some communities honour Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati across three sets of days instead of the nine Navadurga. None of these is the "one correct" version. Studying the Mahavidyas alongside is enriching — as long as we respect their differences.
25. AAnvayaSo, the takeaway for listeners?
26. VVedarthEach night, pick one form and ask: what aspect of wisdom is she asking me to think about? That's all. No pressure to get a ritual right because of a podcast.
27. AAnvayaI love that. Tomorrow we go into Day Two — Brahmacharini and Bhairavi, discipline and transformation. The full stories, the art and the sources are on samskritiarts.com.
28. VVedarthShubha Navaratri, everyone.
29. AAnvayaShubha Navaratri!
